Tad Gormley to Temporarily Close for Turf Upgrades
January 5, 2026
City Park Conservancy (CPC) will temporarily close Tad Gormley Stadium beginning January 12 to complete a replacement of the stadium’s synthetic turf field, an important investment that will enhance safety, performance, and long-term durability for athletes and community users.
The turf currently in place was installed in 2017 and has reached the end of its useful life due to years of heavy use. The replacement project represents CPC’s continued commitment to maintaining high-quality athletic facilities that serve schools, leagues, and the broader community. The stadium is expected to reopen around March 1, pending weather conditions.
“City Park’s athletic facilities bring our community together. This project is about investing in the future of Tad Gormley Stadium and the thousands of athletes who rely on it each year,” said Rebecca Dietz, President & CEO, City Park Conservancy. “Replacing the turf ensures a safer, more reliable playing surface and allows this historic stadium to continue serving the community for years to come.”
During construction, Tad Gormley Stadium, including the track, will be inaccessible. CPC is actively working with athletic directors, coaches, and user groups to minimize disruption and support continuity of play.
To accommodate track practices, the City Park Practice Track, located adjacent to Tad Gormley Stadium, will be reserved and closed to the public for scheduled collegiate athletic use Monday through Friday from 7-9am and 1-3pm. These designated times will help ensure teams have predictable access to a training surface while the stadium is closed.
For soccer programming, CPC is coordinating with coaches and league leaders to relocate practices and matches to alternate fields within City Park, based on availability and scheduling needs.
CPC appreciates the flexibility and partnership of its athletic users and the general community, during this temporary closure and looks forward to welcoming teams back to Tad Gormley Stadium on a newly installed turf field this spring.
