City Park Announces Return of Dragon Slide
June 17, 2026
City Park Conservancy (CPC) will celebrate the return of the Dragon Slide to Storyland with a family friendly community event on June 25, featuring Storytime, interactive activities and a playful “Dragon Fire” activation in partnership with longtime Park supporters and philanthropists Cathy and Morris Bart. The event celebrates the new slide, which replaces the beloved, well-used original Dragon Slide with a safe, modern attraction.
Families are invited to Storyland on Thursday, June 25 starting at 10:30am for a Storyland Storytime reading of “Puff, the Magic Dragon” by a CPC team member. Following Storytime, the Barts will participate in the ceremonial first slide on the new Dragon Slide followed by a group photo with families and community members.
“Few playground slides that I am aware of get their own news articles when they disappear,” said Rebecca Dietz, CPC President and CEO. “The return of the iconic Dragon Slide is about more than just restoring a piece of a playground – it’s about bringing our community back together to enjoy a cherished part of New Orleans childhood. We are especially grateful to Cathy and Morris Bart for helping us preserve this space that our community has loved for so long.”
Introduced in 1950, Storyland has delighted generations of New Orleanians with its enchanting fairytale exhibits under the cover of centuries-old live oak trees. For decades, children and families have made memories climbing, sliding and playing in the spaces that also include Captain Hook’s Pirate Ship, Pinocchio and Jack & Jill’s Hill.
The installation of the new Dragon Slide marks the continuation of this tradition, ensuring future generations can experience that same magic and create lasting memories.
“Storyland has such a special place in my heart and in the hearts of lots of New Orleanians, and I’m thrilled to partner with City Park Conservancy to bring home a new and improved Dragon Slide for everyone in our community to enjoy,” said attorney and philanthropist Morris Bart. “I’m certain that the community will be just as excited for the next generations to have the same experiences that have shaped the slide into a beloved local landmark.”
Complimentary snowballs will be available at the event, and attendees are also invited to try an optional taste treat: Morris Bart’s Louisiana Hot Sauce. This signature “Dragon Fire” experience features a dash of heat for guests who are feeling adventurous. Adults are also invited to visit the “Dragon Breath Sampling Station” to sample the hot sauce. A limited number of complimentary bottles of Morris Bart’s Louisiana Hot Sauce will also be available while supplies last.
