Fall in City Park: Events, Music, Markets & More

Fall has a way of bringing New Orleans outside.

As the days begin to cool, City Park fills with reasons to spend a little more time under the oaks – wandering through the Botanical Garden, listening to live music, shopping for something new to plant at home or making Halloween memories with the family.

Whether you’re planning a full Saturday in the Park or looking for something to do on a fall evening, here are a few ways to enjoy the season in the Heart of the City.

Welcome Fall at the New Orleans Botanical Garden

Fall is one of the best times to slow down and explore the New Orleans Botanical Garden. Across 10 acres, more than 2,000 varieties of plants from around the world share space with Louisiana landscapes, art and architecture.

Wander through the Conservatory of the Two Sisters, discover the work of one of New Orleans’ most celebrated artists in the Helis Foundation Enrique Alférez Sculpture Garden or, on weekends, watch a miniature New Orleans come to life in the Historic New Orleans Train Garden.

And this fall, there are even more reasons to visit.

Tuesday Nights Sound a Little Different in the Park

A longtime City Park tradition, Tuesdays at Twilight brings live music to the Pavilion of the Two Sisters in an intimate, relaxed setting. Running through October 27, the weekly series features a different performance each Tuesday from 6–8pm, with music ranging from jazz and standards to familiar favorites.

Settle in, enjoy the music and spend a fall evening at one of the Park’s most beloved concert series.

Spend an Evening with Enrique

October also means the return of Evenings with Enrique, a free outdoor concert series in the Helis Foundation Enrique Alférez Sculpture Garden. On October 7, 14, 21 and 28, enjoy live music from 5–7:30pm. surrounded by the work of Enrique Alférez and the landscapes of the Botanical Garden. Presented courtesy of The Helis Foundation, the series combines Latin music, art and nature for one of the Park’s most relaxing fall traditions.

Bring someone along, find a spot in the Garden and enjoy a New Orleans evening outdoors.

Get Into the Halloween Spirit at Ghosts in the Oaks

By mid-October, things get a little spookier in the Heart of the City. From October 15-18, Ghosts in the Oaks returns to Carousel Gardens Amusement Park and Storyland for four nights of family friendly Halloween fun.

This annual City Park fundraiser combines trick-or-treating, unlimited amusement park rides, activities and entertainment throughout two of the Park’s most beloved family attractions. This year’s outer-space theme adds an out-of-this-world twist to the Halloween tradition. Ghosts in the Oaks typically sells out, so families planning to attend should purchase tickets in advance.

Find Something New for Your Garden

Fall planting season isn’t just happening inside the Botanical Garden. On Saturdays, October 10 and November 7, the Pelican Greenhouse gives gardeners a chance to take a little piece of the Garden home. Shop annuals, perennials, native plants, houseplants, vegetables, herbs and more – including many plants propagated from cuttings, seeds and divisions of specimens growing in the New Orleans Botanical Garden.

Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just trying to keep your first houseplant alive, it’s a great opportunity to discover something new and get advice along the way.

Make a Day of Fall in City Park

Of course, you don’t need an event on the calendar to enjoy fall in City Park. Take a morning walk beneath the live oaks, grab coffee and beignets, bring the kids to a playground, explore Couturie Forest or find a spot along the lagoons to slow down for a while.

Then, check the City Park events calendar before you visit. With concerts, markets, garden programs, family activities and seasonal traditions happening throughout the Park, there’s often something new waiting around the corner.
